Manipulating Wire

Big Idea:

Creating form with wire. Taking something drawn 2D and turning it 3D with wire.

Description of Setting:

High School Art Classroom, 30+ students, 9 tables, 35 chairs, 2 sinks, projector

Public School, Fall Semester, 1st Quarter

45 minute class periods

Art History:

Examples of artists using the techniques popularized by the sculptor Alexander Calder.

Wire can create action and form with different techniques. It portrays a flat 2D form in a 3D plain. Artists can create emotion through the expression of line created using wire.

Goal and Outcomes:

Students will be able to take a sketched idea and turn it into a 3 dimensional piece with wire.

Students will come brainstorm multiple avenues on how they will alter and create their drawing 3 dimensionally.

Students will study different wire techniques to use in their final artwork

Students will explain what they were trying to make and how it relates to the sketch they had created.

Students will be able to make a cement mold for their base that will hold up the metal wire form created.

Positive Critique will be had at end of each class.

Discussion pertaining to Alexander Calder in class. Is it art? How did it make you feel? Does this give you opportunities to express yourselves in other ways?

Materials:

sketchbooks, pencils, wire, cement, wood, linoleum.

Management Procedure:

Students will arrive on time and take there seats for attendance. Students will stay attentive and quiet while working.Students will not text on cell phones. Students will raise hand with questions. Students will respect one another and the work that is being created. Students will give positive feed back.

Instructional Process:

Students will walk into class and take their seats and wait for instruction. Once everyone is quiet students will be presented the still life assignment. We will then discuss drawing as line.

Basic set of art history will be outlined for them. Students will have time to think and discuss how they might create art with wire. In what ways can wire create mood? We will discuss the expression of line in 3D art.

Instruction will be had on different wire bending and manipulation techniques.

The Students will sketch out their designs and ideas. Three sketches required.

Students will meet with teacher to discuss how wire will be used with sketch.

Students will be given wire to work with and begin the process of manipulation and creation of sketch in a 3D plain.

Following days will be creation of artwork and building of bases.

critique and discussion.

Students will have the opportunity to pick an artist discussed to start there paper. This paper will help create an art history book and test material at the end of the year.

As the time nears end, the students will put away all material and find their table and wait for the bell patiently.

Student will leave the classroom courteous of one another.
